Big Vague II
for piano and electronics
Electronics: Will Bertrand
In French, the word vague means “wave.” The title Big Vague uses both the French and English sense of “vague”.
When approaching writing another solo piano piece, I took a step back to consider the things I like and dislike about the piano as an instrument. What I like is the power and intensity of the instrument, and the way that it resonates when sustained chords are played. What I don’t always like is the harshness of its attack, particularly in the middle register. As the piece developed, I decided to introduce amplification and a delay between two speakers, which further accentuate the resonance of the instrument.
