Inspired by Eliane Radigue and Alvin Lucier’s experiments with tape degradation, I became interested in the emotional potential of lo-fi. Many of my favorite musical recordings are, from a technical perspective, poorly recorded – but that roomy, muffled sound is often what brings out a new expressivity from the music. The output of bands and artists like Cherubs, Sebadoh, Daniel Johnston, The Microphones, and Storm & Stress were, and continue to be, particularly evocative for me. The Fried Room is equally inspired by the accessible, roomy recordings of lo-fi bands as it is by Radigue’s experiments with generation loss, Grisey’s spectralist masterpieces, and Ernie Kovacs’ old “Eugene” sketch from his groundbreaking 1950s “Silent Show”. All of these are works of art that are, at least in part, about their own medium.
