Paradoxically, I wanted to approach writing this violin/viola duet as an “orchestra piece”, but I also wanted to take advantage of the small chamber ensemble’s unique ability to synchronize and blur the lines (to the listener) between the two instruments. What I ended up with was something simultaneously lush, atmospheric, and a little uneasy.
